A review of “Dreams in Nightmares“, shown in the Panorama section.
Thundering music, growing ever more intense, echoes from the speakers. The first audience members start covering their ears. Meanwhile, black-and-white images of fieldwork and a country road rolling by fill the screen. The music builds to an almost unbearable tension—until it suddenly cuts out, releasing the audience into the film.
Nachdem ihr der Job gekündigt wird, sucht Z ihre zwei engsten Freundinnen in New York auf. Gemeinsam machen sie sich auf die Suche nach einer weiteren Freund:in, die sich länger nicht mehr gemeldet hat. Das Publikum wird mitgenommen auf einen Roadtrip durch die USA, der eine tiefgehende und liebevolle Freundschaft zwischen den jungen Frauen porträtiert. Gemeinsam gehen sie feiern, besuchen queere Poetry Slams, schauen bei alten Bekannten und den Eltern der verschwundenen Freund:in vorbei. Skurrile Begegnungen greifen Themen wie den stark verankerten Rassismus im Land oder die Schwierigkeiten der Eltern im Umgang mit dem Pronomen „they“ auf. Durch Gespräche der drei, wie sie auf ihrem Weg nur in Restaurants, die von Schwarzen betrieben werden, essen gehen möchten, wird ihre Sorge vor rassistischer Diskriminierung und schwierigen Auseinandersetzungen deutlich. Auf ihrer Reise werden sie auch mit ihrer eigenen Identität konfrontiert, Lebensentscheidungen werden hinterfragt. Dazwischen immer wieder Traumsequenzen Z’s, welche ihr kulturelles Erbe verdeutlichen. Unbedingt möchte sie der Bedeutung dieser auf den Grund gehen. Eine Reise zur Selbstfindung beginnt.
The way the three women treat each other—and the way Z interacts with her partner—is deeply loving. Through phone calls where characters speak directly to the camera or moments where they hold each other close, the film creates a sense of intimacy and unquestioned affection. They support each other’s choices, give each other space, and yet are always there for each other. Even when one of them suddenly lashes out in a way that might seem irrational to the others, there is always understanding. This is not about twisted relationships but rather an idealized portrayal of friendship.
Although Dreams in Nightmares is not part of the Generation section, it deals—like many films in 14Plus—with the journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and the breaking free from societal expectations to embrace one’s true desires. Along the way, it paints a beautiful picture of friendship—one that serves as a role model. The characters in the film may be in their early 30s, slightly older than the typical protagonists in 14Plus, but they can still provide valuable inspiration for audiences in their early 20s who are trying to navigate their own paths. Some sequences in the film may feel unconventional or experimental, but in the grand scheme of the work, they are easy to overlook.
